Frequently Asked Questions

Is acupuncture painful?

No. Acupuncture needles are ultra fine and when inserted correctly the needles can barely be felt, except when they are stimulated leading to a heavy, tingling or electric sensation. These feelings are sometimes perceived as unusual but not painful.

What happens in a typical acupuncture treatment?

After each needle is inserted, you may feel nothing, or mild numbness, heaviness, or slight tingling. The needles will be left in for 20-30 minutes while you relax and are then withdrawn. The whole treatment takes approximately 40 minutes.

How will I feel after acupuncture?

Most people experience a sense of relaxation or tiredness after a treatment. To assist the treatment it is advisable that you allow your body to rest, ensure that you drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol.

How soon will I feel improvements?

Some people can feel improvements from the very first treatment, for others it may take longer. In many cases if the condition has been worsening for a long period of time, healing will similarly take time.

How many acupuncture treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required will differ for every person according to the duration, severity, and nature of the condition. No two conditions, or people, respond exactly the same. Depending on the type of condition being treated it may be useful to have a follow up treatment after the main course of treatment has been completed.

Before your appointment?

Your pulse and tongue are checked to assist with diagnosis, therefore it is important that you avoid the following at least one hour prior to your appointment:
- alcoholic beverages
- drinks containing caffeine
- meals or snacks
- cleaning/brushing your tongue with a toothbrush
